With a blazing green and pink paint job complete with an enthusiastic alien motif, the exterior of Area 51 Alien Center is enough to beckon most drivers off the highway. Then there’s the gas station and travel center, brimming with just about anything alien-themed you can imagine.
Atomic Inn
Retro themed with modern luxuries, the Atomic Inn was originally built to house defense contractors and military personnel that worked at Nellis Air Force Base’s top-secret installations (like Area 51 and the Nevada Nuclear Test Site). Belmont Ghost Town
Following a silver strike in 1865, the peak of this town's short-lived boom brought in around 2,000 residents. After a boom comes a bust, and Belmont was no different. Once silver and other minerals declined, many residents moved on to the next boom — this time, the neighboring town of Manhattan.
Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park
Talk about a double whammy! This state park contains the almost-perfectly-preserved remains of a mining town founded in 1897 (including an impressive 30-stamp mill). But as if that weren’t enough, the ghost town sits just a bone’s throw from one of the highest concentrations of Ichthyosaur fossils – massive, ancient marine reptiles – ever discovered.

Hoping to have an extraterrestrial encounter of your own? Thanks to its proximity to Area 51, the legendary Black Mailbox just may be your chance. UFO hunters and the alien obsessed have been meeting at this storied Nevada landmark for decades, trying their luck at eyeing mysterious aircraft and leaving messages for the great beyond.
Boot Hill Cemetery
In the late 1800s, Pioche was one of the roughest, most violent towns in the West. At the town's famous Boot Hill Cemetery, an astonishing 72 unfortunate souls were laid to rest before a single person died of natural causes. While you're there, keep your eyes peeled for an entire section of graves nicknamed "Murderer's Row.”
Carson City Ghost Walk
If you ain’t afraid of no ghosts (or ghost stories), partake in a Carson City Ghost Walk and get bewitched by the supernatural lore surrounding Victorian-era homes and buildings in the West Side Historic District.
Clown Motel Lobby
The Clown Motel in Tonopah boasts what’s got to be the largest private collection of clown figurines and memorabilia under the sun. If the creepy clown theme isn’t enough to spook you, the added bonus of some resident ghosts slinking over from the cemetery next door might. Drop by the lobby, get drowned in clowns, and snap a photo.

Despite its name, alien jerky is made right here on planet Earth, and some of the very best can be found at E.T. Fresh Jerky. Restock those road trip snacks, freshen up at the “cleanest restrooms in Area 51,” and snap a selfie with the cowboy alien murals out front for a pit stop you’ll never forget.
Extraterrestrial Highway sign
No trip along the Extraterrestrial Highway is complete without a photo of this iconic roadside sign. There’s two of ‘em along State Route 375, which earned its outta-this-world nickname for its proximity to Area 51 and the countless UFO sightings that have been reported on this highway. Keep your eyes peeled – not just for the sky-high signs, but signs of otherworldly life, too.

Fort Churchill State Historic Park
Interested to get a taste of what Nevada was like during the frontier days? If so, a visit to this state park should be high on your adventuring to-do list. Located about an hour west of Carson City, this former army fort was built to protect early settlers making their way across the West. After being decommissioned in 1869, much of the fort’s materials were recycled to build nearby Buckland Station.

This quaint historic mining town is not only home to the worst mining accident in Nevada history, it is also the birthplace of the Silver State’s oldest hotel: the Gold Hill Hotel & Saloon. Gold Point Ghost Town
History enthusiasts will come unglued with a trip to Gold Point Ghost town, just southwest of Goldfield. Originally a silver mining camp in the early 1860s and founded as Lime Point, Gold Point was once a boomtown with 125 dwellings, a post office, hotels, cafes, a store, and numerous saloons.
Goldfield Cemetery
Goldfield’s go-to graveyard offers a hearty helping of history with a side of Weird Nevada. In addition to an unusual assortment of epitaphs chronicling its permanent residents’ mining-era demises, the location happens to be the cemetery’s second home. Thanks to a swelling population, the remains had to be relocated to the edge of town by a group known as the Official Ghouls.

Goodsprings was once a flourishing mining settlement in southern Nevada, boasting a larger population than Las Vegas (only 45 minutes away) at one time. This tiny, remote community—among the most isolated in the Lower 48—sits in the bottom of a narrow, picturesque canyon in the heart of Nevada’s outback. The surrounding 113,000 acres of wilderness boast towering mountain peaks, forest wilderness, and hundreds of miles of trails. The town’s name comes from a Shoshone legend that tells of a giant named Tsawhawbitts who captured unsuspecting men in its basket and took them to a crater to consume them.

Lady in Red's room
During Tonopah's booming days, the Mizpah Hotel was not strictly a hotel (if you know what we mean). Over the years, many guests came and went—some specifically just to visit a certain year-round resident who lodged in a palatial fifth-floor suite where she worked in—and prospered from—the oldest trade in the world. At least until an ex-lover, possibly a former patron, stabbed and strangled her in a fit of jealous rage. To this day, it is said she still visits her old room.

A roadside gift shop, café, and motel that cheekily nods to Nevada’s reputation as a hotbed of extraterrestrial activity, the Little A’Le’Inn is an outta-this-world place to peruse photos of alleged, first-person UFO accounts, try a Saucer Burger, and pick up souvenirs that would be hard to find anywhere else.
Lovelock Ghost Walk
The haunted tour begins at the historic Lovelock Trail Depot—a historic site dating to 1880. Take a hayride around downtown Lovelock where you’ll hear stories about historic sites and buildings. The Lovelock Ghost Walk is family friendly, just know that stories of murder and mayhem will be part of topics covered.
Lunar Crater
This 430-foot-deep crater wasn’t actually hollowed out by a wayward space rock: It's the remains of an extinct volcano. However, the mile-wide formation shares enough features with the actual moon that NASA chose it as an authentic option for training astronauts in preparation for lunar missions.
Mackay Mansion
There’s no better place to get into Virginia City’s “spirit” than at one of the most haunted historic mansions in town. A magnet for paranormal enthusiasts, take a tour of this 164-year-old Comstock millionaire’s mansion for an authentic look into Nevada’s past.
Manhattan Ghost Town
When visiting this fascinating living ghost town today, (125 people still live here), the bank’s ruins remain a must-see, including the original safe in the rear of the building. Although it’s undeniably dangerous to go inside these ruins, the safe can been seen from the street, and “The Nye & Ormsby County Bank, Manhattan, Nevada” is still distinguishable.

Plagued by jackrabbits, typhoid, Mormon crickets, fire, and drought, Metropolis never really stood a chance. What has stood up against time, though, is a two-story brick arch that once served as a school entryway. Wandering into the basement behind it is risky, but you may be able to spy an original chalkboard from ground level of this ghost town.

Million Dollar Courthouse
It’s not just a clever name! Through a series of construction and payment challenges, the cost ballooned from $26,400 in 1872 to nearly $1 million when the building was finally paid off in 1940. Today, this lasting remnant of Nevada’s rich history is preserved as a museum, complete with relics from Pioche’s historic post office, the (allegedly haunted) courtroom, and original jailhouse out back.

The iconic Mizpah is one of Nevada’s most famous hotels. Built in 1907, the building was completely restored to its bonanza-era glory in 2011. National Atomic Testing Museum
Offering a robust look at the history of nuclear testing in southern Nevada and nationwide, there’s no better way to get to know Nuclear Nevada history than at the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas. The museum is open daily from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
Nevada National Security Site
Located about 65 miles north of Las Vegas, the Nevada National Security Site is where scientists conducted hundreds of above and below ground nuclear tests from 1951 to 1992. This area is completely off limits to the general public unless you secure one of their monthly community tours.
Nevada State Prison Tours and Haunted Tours
The Nevada State Prison in Carson City is widely considered to be one of the most haunted buildings in the state. For decades, inmates, employees, and—now—visitors have reported run-ins with the building’s spectral residents.
Old Tonopah Cemetery
There’s no better way to get to know the "Queen of the Silver Camps" than at its historic cemetery, Here, visitors can discover the stories of the men, women, and children who lived and perished during the town's great bonanza. Not only is the site allegedly haunted, it's mere steps from the legendary Clown Motel.
Overland Hotel & Saloon
This popular establishment has been a Pioche fixture since 1948. The saloon boasts an Old West bar and reception cage that was carted over from a nearby ghost town. Upstairs, guests can enjoy a comfortable evening in one of many themed suites including the Garden Room, the Bear’s Den, and the Fishing Hole. If you’re up for a spooky experience, ask the staff about which rooms are haunted.

While there are 13 rooms to choose from at this historic hotel, Room 10 has received the most reports of paranormal activity, including from Travel Channel’s “Ghost Adventures,” who allegedly made contact with the resident spirits.
Room 11 at the Silver Queen Hotel
The most famous Comstock ghost is a prostitue named Rosie, who occupies room 11 at the Silver Queen Hotel. Rosie operated in the Silver Queen and is said to have taken her life in room 11 during the late 1800s. Rosie has evidently never checked out, having made countless appearances in the decades following her suicide.

Techatticup Mine & Nelson Ghost Town
The oldest, richest, and most famous gold mine in Southern Nevada, the Techatticup Mine awaits photographers and history buffs in stunningly scenic Eldorado Canyon, just 45 minutes outside Las Vegas. Even Hollywood was in awe of this place! It was featured it in the 2001 film "3,000 Miles to Graceland" and the film crew left behind a crashed fighter jet prop.

Unionville
Nestled in a verdant canyon between Winnemucca and Lovelock sits the living ghost town of Unionville. Founded in 1861 during the Civil War—hence the name—this community enjoyed a few prosperous years as a gold boomtown. A young Samuel Clemens (known to history as Mark Twain) famously tried his hand at prospecting here for a few months, and visitors can still check out the remains of his cabin.
